Ein historischer Abriß über die Unterbringung und das Wohnen von Menschen mit geistiger Behinderung seit der Neuzeit leitet von der Zeit der Anstaltsgründungen bis zu gegenwärtigen Wohnformen für Menschen mit geistiger Behinderung über.
Ein Rückblick in die Geschichte der Umsetzung verschiedener Denkmodelle über geistige Behinderung ab 1933 eröffnet Kapitel four. Zentraler Gegenstand dieses Kapitels ist dann die Schilderung des Normalisierungsprinzips in seiner Entstehung und weiteren Ausformulierung.

Während drei Formen des Wohnens vorwiegend anhand von Literatur dargestellt werden, erfolgt die Betrachtung der vierten im Rahmen einer eigenen Beobachtungsstudie. Diese fällt im Vergleich zu den übrigen etwas umfangreicher aus.
Kapitel 7 beinhaltet eine Interpretation und Reflexion der insbesondere in Kapitel 6 gewonnenen Ergebnisse.
