Die gängige Literatur ist sich in den meisten Fällen nicht einig ob es sich bei der Ultrabewegung um eine Jugendbewegung, Jugendkultur, oder eine eigenständige Subkultur handelt. Um dies zu klären, habe ich mich in der folgenden Arbeit damit beschäftigt, ob die Ultrabewegung eine eigenständige Subkultur darstellt.
Hierzu habe ich im ersten Teil die geschichtliche Entwicklung der Fankultur in Deutschland, von den Anfängen des Zuschauersports bis hin zur heutigen Ultrabewegung, genauer beleuchtet. Um diese zu verstehen wird auch ein nötiger Exkurs nach Italien, dem Mutterland der Ultrabewegung, durchgeführt.
Im zweiten Teil meiner Arbeit kommen in einer qualitativen Befragung Führungspersonen diverser Ultragruppierungen selbst zu Wort. Dies ist notwendig, um deren Auffassung der Ultrakultur dokumentieren zu können und abschließend den Versuch zu unternehmen, die Frage nach subkulturellen Zügen der Ultrabewegung zu klären.
